Experiences

Beyond the reef, Viani Bay offers a variety of ways to connect with the ocean, the land, and the local community. Experiences are informal, small-scale, and arranged on the go. Some guests stay active; others prefer to simply relax by the water. We’re always happy to suggest options — or let the day unfold naturally.

Sorry, no nightclubs. Just the occasional serenade of birds, crickets and waves.

  • Diving, snorkelling & freediving

  • Coral restoration & giant clam nursery

  • Cultural experiences and hiking

  • Kayak, paddleboard

  • Manta, dolphin & whale encounters

  • Fiji Sea Salt tasting

Experiences are arranged around conditions and interest — not a fixed resort schedule.

Ocean & Water With the Rainbow Reef right at our doorstep, diving and snorkelling are a core part of every stay in Viani Bay. Dive Academy Fiji is our on-site PADI 5★ Eco Dive Resort and Freediving Center. Our experienced crew focus on personalised, small-group diving and take pride in showing guests the diversity of this world-class reef. Beyond the reef, the ocean continues to offer variety. Manta ray snorkelling at Rabi Island and whale encounters are seasonal, while dolphins are present year-round. Local fishing and spearfishing trips, sunset cruises, and visits to our coral restoration site can be arranged flexibly. Guests are welcome to swim or snorkel straight off the beach, or explore the bay by kayak or paddleboard.

Land & Hikes Explore the area on foot through strolls around the bay, herbal walks, or guided hikes with the option of a boat pick-up for the return. A visit to Dakuniba village includes a walk upstream to giant rocks, freshwater pools, and ancient stone carvings hidden along the river. We’re also happy to arrange day excursions to Taveuni, including the Lavena Coastal Walk, Bouma National Heritage Park, Waitavala waterslide, and the International Dateline, which runs straight through the island. Insider tip: If you arrive in the morning or depart in the afternoon, Taveuni highlights can often be included as part of your transfer. And don’t worry — even though you may stand with one foot in yesterday and one in today at the Meridian, Fiji keeps everyone on the same date and time.

Culture & Community Cultural experiences in Viani Bay grow naturally out of everyday moments. Guests are welcome to join the team for kava — our traditional drink made from a root — sharing stories and learning about its meaning in Fijian culture. You may take part in the preparation of a lovo meal, the traditional way of cooking food in an earth oven, followed by dinner and conversations around the bonfire. Our chefs are happy to share their recipes during an informal cooking class. You can learnhow to make fresh coconut milk or hear about the healing uses of local plants. Daily life in the bay also includes school activities during the week and church gatherings on Sundays, where everyone is welcome to observe or join respectfully. Nothing is forced, no staged performances.

Conservation in Practice Care for the environment is part of how Viani Bay Resort operates, both on land and in the water. Guests are welcome to participate in our coral and giant clam restoration, gaining insight into reef protection and long-term stewardship. These projects focus on practical, small-scale action. Beyond the reef, we reduce our impact through everyday choices and are happy to share these. We also organise beach clean-ups around the bay and on Taveuni, together with local communities. Insider tip: Defog your mask with hibiscus leaves instead of chemicals or soap.

House of Salt Visit House of Salt to learn about the small-batch crafting of Fiji Sea Salt and infused virgin coconut oils using local herbs and fruits. Explore how traditional techniques are combined with island ingredients to create a growing range of natural products including salt baths, body scrubs, and coconut soaps. Jone is happy to share the story behind each product and its connection to local life. Enjoy a guided tasting of signature salts and take home a deeper appreciation for Fijian flavours and wellness. House of Salt is a model of sustainable micro-enterprise in our bay.
